Madeira is a mountainous volcanic island 1076km southwest of Portugal with skyscraper cliffs that hug the sea. The glass-bottom lookout at Cabo Girão sits atop one of the highest sea cliffs in the world at 580 metres. Man-made irrigation channels (levadas) from the 15th Century cover the island and are now the backbone for 2100km of highly-organised hiking paths.

Commute down into the capital of Funchal from the slopes of Monte village in special wicker sledges on wooden rails that reach speeds of up to 38kph. Enjoy the warm Atlantic ocean in the city's man-made pool complexes such as the Complexo Balnear do Lido.
